Dehydrated Garlic vs Fresh Garlic: What’s The Difference?
Garlic has long been known for its health benefits.
There are countless recipes using garlic, from soups to salads to sauces.
But did you know that some types of garlic are better than others?
Garlic is one of the oldest spices in existence.
It was originally cultivated in China around 5000 BC.
Today, garlic is grown worldwide and is commonly found in grocery stores.
There are two main varieties of garlic: fresh and dehydrated.
Both are great options, but they each have their pros and cons
Dehydrated Garlic vs Fresh Garlic
Garlic is a member of the lily family, and is native to Europe and Asia. It was cultivated in China around 5000 BC, and is believed to have been used since ancient times. In addition to being used as a seasoning, garlic is also used as medicine. Garlic is known to help lower blood cholesterol levels, improve circulation, boost immune system function, prevent cancer, and reduce the risk of heart disease. Garlic is also said to aid digestion, relieve cold symptoms, and fight infections.
Fresh garlic is available year round, but is usually harvested in late summer or early fall. It is sold in bunches, and is typically stored in the refrigerator until ready to use. Once cut from the bulb, the cloves are peeled and placed in a bowl of cool water. This helps remove any dirt or debris that may be stuck to the clove. After about 30 minutes, the garlic is removed from the water and dried. Dried garlic is easy to store, and lasts longer than fresh garlic. However, if you buy dried garlic, it needs to be rehydrated before using. To rehydrate dried garlic, place 1/2 cup of boiling water over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of salt per 1/4 cup of water. Stir well, and let sit for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, add 1 teaspoon of olive oil, and stir well. Let stand for another 5 minutes. Drain off excess liquid, and transfer to a storage container. Store in a dry location, away from sunlight.
Dried garlic is not recommended for long term storage because it loses its potency after 6 months. Fresh garlic should be refrigerated when not in use.
Dehydrated Garlic
Dehydrated garlic is made by drying fresh garlic bulbs. It is an excellent way to preserve garlic for later use. Because dehydrated garlic does not contain moisture, it does not spoil easily. It can be stored indefinitely, and is great for making homemade pesto sauce, salad dressings, marinades, and other recipes where fresh garlic is called for.
Fresh Garlic
To dry garlic, cut off the root end of each bulb, leaving about 1/4 inch attached. Place the bulbs in a single layer on paper towels and leave them until completely dry. Store dried garlic in airtight containers. To rehydrate, place the dried garlic in a bowl and pour enough warm not hot water over the top to cover the garlic. Let stand overnight, then drain and chop.
Which is stronger garlic powder or granulated garlic?
Garlic is a versatile ingredient that can be used in many different ways. It can be added to soups, sauces, stews, dips, salads, pasta dishes, and even desserts. Garlic is available in two forms, raw and cooked. Raw garlic is usually sold in a clove form and needs to be peeled prior to using. Dried garlic is usually sold in powdered form and does not need to be peeled. Both types of garlic are good for adding flavor to recipes but each type has its own benefits. Garlic is a very versatile ingredient. It can be used in many different ways from adding flavor to dishes to making sauces and dressings.
